WE, CENTRAL EUROPEANS – BETRAYED OR BETRAYERS?
“We, Central Europeans, are ready to fight for Europe, even if at times our love may be unrequited,” wrote Viktoria Amelina, the Ukrainian writer, killed in Kramatorsk by a Russian missile. She thought of Budapest in 1956, of Prague in 1968.
How does it apply to us today? A Bosnian, a Czech, a Lithuanian, a Pole, a Slovak and an Ukrainian will discuss their identity and responsibility.

EURÓPA: KTO KOHO ZRÁDZA?

“My Stredoeurópania sme ochotní bojovať za Európu, ešte aj v časoch, keď naša láska nemusí byť opätovaná,” napísala Viktoria Amelina, ukrajinská spisovateľka, ktorú toto leto v Kramatorsku zabila ruská raketa. Mala na mysli Budapešť roku 1956, Prahu roku 1968.

Ako sa to týka dneška? Bosňan, Čech, Slovák, Litovčanka, Ukrajinka a Polska budú diskutovať o svojej identite a zodpovednosti.

Welcome to Central European Forum 2023!

Bratislava – Sarajevo – Olomouc – Budapest – Sejny 

It is not easy not to face the perfect storm of crises: the shrinking space for democracy, the extreme polarisation of our societies, to face imperialist war, to face  unprecedented global threats such as climate crises and AI revolution. The forum would bring together leading regional and European thinkers, both writers, and academics, and reflect on feasible solutions and answers in discussion with the audience.

The initiative would provide a platform for realistic hope, that would encourage the public to think about possible solutions both for the  civilisation, for the planet friendly economy and for democracy and human dignity, instead of mere fear, that forces us to avoid thinking about the all to difficult challenges.

The central event would take place in Bratislava, at the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. This year, it would be preceded by a discussion at Sejny – Krasnogruda and followed by discussions in Olomouc, Budapest and Sarajevo. The discussions are literary open to everybody, no fee, there will be no registration, nor fee, required, and accessible online.  

The forum strives to create platform for high profile European experts and authors, and manifest, at the same time, the synergy of independent arts, theatre, film and literature from Visegrad and Bosnia. 

CEF 2023 aims to manifest strong Bosnia – Visegrad connection and mutual influence of independent culture. 

Central Europe and Balkans have always been places with a unique potential to contribute to the global culture. Their uniqueness originates in cultural variety that has been shaping our national identities throughout centuries. Our arts and culture articulates both, the benefits of it, and the pain of moments when our nations unforgivably failed to live within diversity. 

But while our authors and artists keep inspiring the world, the priority of culture in the societal discourse inside our countries, if compared to the rest of Europe, is rather low. In Slovakia, e.g. the budget for culture in comparison to other items traditionally remains one of the lowest in EU, in Bosnia it is even lower. Why does our region value its culture so poorly? Perhaps, it is because throughout our history, culture was mostly understood as a tool to serve the power, and independency of culture was unwelcome. We lack the understanding of culture as driving force for our inner cohesion,  imagination, vitality and for human dignity. Driving our capacity to hope. Bratislava, Sarajevo, Sejny, Olomouc and Sejny would will be striving to make a difference. 

 

Strach už nepomôže

Vítajte v Stredoeurópskom fóre 2023!

Bratislava – Sarajevo – Olomouc – Budapest – Sejny 

Nie je ľahké nezatvárať oči pri pohľade na dokonalú búrku kríz, ktorá sa už rozbehla: na zmenšovanie demokratického priestoru, na extrémnu polarizáciu spoločnosti, na imperialistickú vojnu na európskom kontinente, na bezprecedentné hrozby, akými sú klimatická kríza a nástup umelej inteligencie. Stredoeurópske fórum chce priviesť najzaujímavejších európskych mysliteľov Strednej Európy, ale aj z celého sveta, tak akademikov, ako umelcov, aby spolu – a s účasťou čím rôznorodejšieho publika –  hľadali východická a hovorili o možných odpovediach.

Cieľom tejto iniciatívy je vytvoriť priestor pre nádej, ktorá by bola reálna, a povzbudiť verejnosť v tom, že nemá zmysel uhýbať realite a nechať sa paralyzovať strachom zoči voči hrozbám, ale naopak, že má zmysel zamerať sa na možné riešenia – tak pre ekonomiku, ktorá nebude ohrozovať planétu, ako pre demokraciu a ľudskú dôstojnosť. 

Najväčšie z podujatí Stredoeurópskeho fóra 2023 sa bude konať novembri v bratislavskej Starej Tržnici, ako vždy v predvečer a na výročie Nežnej revolúcie. Tento rok mu však v lete bude predchádzať diskusia v poľských Sejnách – v kultúrnom centre Pogranicze, na unikátnom mieste v blízkosti litovských hraníc, kde žil Czeslaw Milosz. Stredoeurópske fórum bude ďalej pokračovať diskusiou v Olomouci v spolupráci s redakciou Listy, v Budapešti v spolupráciu s  budapeštianskym Kalligramom a napokon v Sarajeve, v legendárnom divadle East – West Center. Všetky diskusie budú otvorené verejnosti a budú takisto dostupné online.

Fórum sa bude snažiť byť spoločným priestorom pre renomovaných expertov a vedcov, a zároveň pre umenie – literárne, filmové, výtvarné – zo všetkých krajín Visegrádu a z Bosny.

Stredná Európa aj Balkán boli kultúrne odjakživa dôležitou inšpiráciou pre Európu aj ostatný svet. Sme jedineční obrovskou vnútornou rôznosťou. Naša kultúra artikuluje toto bohatstvo a zároveň artikuluje hanbu a bolesť v momentoch, keď naše národy neboli ochotné žiť v rôznosti. No hoci naši autori a umelci svet priťahujú, v našich krajinách sa súčasnej kultúre, spoločenskej a umeleckej reflexii, vo všeobecnosti nepripisuje veľká hodnota. Vidieť to už na tom, aké nízke percento verejných financií je určené kultúre, napríklad na Slovensku, alebo aj v Bosne, v porovnaní s európskym priemerom. Možno je to tým, že tu oficiálne mala kultúra historicky predovšetkým za úlohu slúžiť moci. A tak nám uniká, že nezávislá kultúra môže byť silou autentickej súdržnosti v ťažkých časoch, vynaliezavosti a imaginácie, životachopnosti a dôstojnosti, že nám dáva šancu. Stredoeurópske fórum 2023 sa bude snažiť k tomu prispieť: v Bratislave, v Sejnách, v Olomouci, v Budapešti a Sarajeve.
